Occupational Therapists - General Rules
3. Purpose for the proposed rules and background:
The purpose of the Board of Occupational Therapist Rules is to regulate the prelicensure education,
licensure, licensure renewal, relicensure, and continuing education for occupational therapists and
occupational therapy assistants. The proposed rules are intended to: update statutory references;
update references to educational program standards; update the licensure verification requirements;
place relicensure regulations in a table; update the rules for consistency with modifications to the
Public Health Code; and add regulations on the use of telemedicine.
4. Summary of proposed rules:
The proposed rules include the following modifications: provide definitions to terms and
abbreviations that are used throughout the rule set; require an applicant for licensure to disclose each
license, registration, or certification the applicant held in a health profession issued by another state,
the US military, the federal government, or another country; require an applicant to satisfy MCL
333.16174 showing that there are no disciplinary proceedings pending against him or her and that
sanctions are not in force at the time of application to the state of Michigan; reformat the content of
previous R 338.1223a and R 338.1236 into charts; provide definitions for telehealth, telehealth
service and telemedicine; provide the details a licensee must follow when utilizing telehealth; clarify
when an applicant may request a waiver of the continuing education requirements; and add more
acceptable providers of continuing education.
